Checking the Checks ✅

Get stories like this sent to you directly, once a week on Thursdays.

If you’d rather play charades with Jar Jar Binks than keep up with national news, we gotchyou. Here’s the biggest headlines and updates coming out of each branch of government.

Executive (Joe & Co.)

  • Biden announced his 6-pronged strategy to combat the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic last Thursday. You can read the entire plan here. The scourge is still scourging in the US with California named the only state not in the high-contagion zone (AKA it is burgundy instead of fire-engine red on the map).
  • The President met with two democratic hold-outs in the Senate (Manchin & Sinema) to try to move his $3.5T Economic Bill forward. To be a fly on that wall…
  • Busy Biden also met with Disney, Walgreens, and Microsoft to discuss getting them on board with his vaccine requirements drawn up in his Covid Strategy. *Tries really hard not to imagine President at a desk with Mickey Mouse & Clippy*

Legislative (House+Senate = Big Mad Congress)

  • Just like you and your sibling, these guys always seem to be bickering. The Economic Bill is currently causing divisions within the Senate Democratic Party
  • Republican State House members in Indiana took a red pen to congressional districts that could potentially close-out Democratic competition. Districting comes up a lot during election year, but this is when the moves are actually made. If you want to know how that particular sausage is made, now’s the time to visit the factory. Read more here

Judicial (👩‍⚖️👩‍⚖️👩‍⚖️👨‍⚖️👨‍⚖️👨‍⚖️👨‍⚖️👨‍⚖️👨‍⚖️)

  • Justice Amy Coney Barrett made a statement to the media on Sunday that the Supreme Court is not a “bunch of partisan hacks” after accusations of partisan sway in Judicial decisions.
  • Last week’s Texas abortion bill made waves, but next month the Court will decide if they will hear the case on Mississippi’s ban on abortion after 15 weeks. This case, more than Texas, will challenge Roe V. Wade directly.

These headlines are posted on every screen and blasted from every speaker like they are the most important things in the world. They aren’t unimportant, but there’s a scale. For Christians, our scale is pretty amazing. Compared to the Hope we have and the job we have, these things don’t need to occupy all of our thoughts.

The Bible tells us that our days are like mist. Here today and gone tomorrow. What are the troubles of one government compared to our God?
